We are thrilled that our song Four Trees (Mirnu Wirra) was first runner-up in the Judith Crossley Memorial Songwriting Award at the Fleurieu Folk Festival. The song commemorates the men and families of the 27th “Unley’s Own” battalion in WW1. In 1915 a memorial for the Gallipoli landings was established in Adelaide’s southern parklands “between the cities” (of Adelaide and Unley). Four golden wattle trees, representing the Allies, were planted and a small structure constructed. Families would gather there for news from the front and to hold vigil. Mirnu Wirra means golden wattle in the language of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide plains. The memorial is no longer at this site. Read more about the memorial here.
